Blood Collection (Venipuncture)
Aim
To collect a venous blood sample safely from a patient for diagnostic purposes, ensuring minimal discomfort and maintaining sample integrity.
Principle
Venipuncture is based on accessing the venous system (usually the median cubital vein) to withdraw blood using a vacuum-sealed system or syringe through percutaneous needle entry.
Materials Required
- Vacutainer System / Syringe (21-23 Gauge)
- Tourniquet & Alcohol Swabs (70% Isopropyl)
- Blood Collection Tubes (Appropriate additives)
- Sterile Gauze & Adhesive Bandage
- Sharps Disposal Container
Procedure (Swipe/Click)
Step 01
Identify patient and apply tourniquet 3-4 inches above the site.
Step 02
Palpate vein and clean site with alcohol swab in circular motion.
Step 03
Perform venipuncture at 15-30° angle with bevel facing up.
Step 04
Fill tubes in correct sequence and invert gently to mix additives.
Step 05
Release tourniquet, remove needle, apply pressure, and discard sharps.
