Blood Collection (Venipuncture)

Aim

To collect a venous blood sample safely from a patient for diagnostic purposes, ensuring minimal discomfort and maintaining sample integrity.

Principle

Venipuncture is based on accessing the venous system (usually the median cubital vein) to withdraw blood using a vacuum-sealed system or syringe through percutaneous needle entry.

Materials Required

  • Vacutainer System / Syringe (21-23 Gauge)
  • Tourniquet & Alcohol Swabs (70% Isopropyl)
  • Blood Collection Tubes (Appropriate additives)
  • Sterile Gauze & Adhesive Bandage
  • Sharps Disposal Container
